Widening Circles: May It Be So
“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
Ranier Maria Rilke wrote, “I live my life in widening circles.” The sense of family, of community, of close connection drew us initially to Immanuel. We enjoyed the shared warmth of greetings in the pews, conversation over coffee after worship, picnics and special events. With time we joined small groups and committees, where we grew to know others well, to learn and grow together. Over time we became involved in local outreach to people in need in our area and those overseas. In those activities we learned ever newer ways of being, of learning, of understanding the world. Our circles widened as we became more involved. The widening circles opened us up, allowed us to see the world in new ways, gave us an abiding concern for justice. Those widening circles, though, always kept the same center, the love of Christ we found embodied in Immanuel, God With Us. I am grateful for the rhythm of being drawn into the Center and being sent out, with others, into the world.
Here’s a prayer for today:
Holy One, capture us in Your widening circles of embrace and concern. Center us around You, O Christ, and orient our lives toward Your Love. Amen.
