Holy Wednesday Devotional

For Holy Week, Immanuel has created a series of online devotionals. Each devotional is adapted from a monologue written by Rev. Aaron Fulp-Eickstaedt. Immanuel will perform these monologues and others at this year’s Maundy Thursday service (April 13, 7:30 pm).

Jesus has a way of taking people’s generosity and gratitude and turning it into enough and more.  But it has taken even us disciples a while to learn that lesson.  After Jesus fed the 5,000 with your five loaves and two fish, he fed 4,000 people in another place.  I’m embarrassed to say that we asked him that time, “How can somebody feed people with bread here in the desert?”  He asked us, “How many loaves do you have?  We told him seven.  He took them and gave thanks for them and broke them and we gave them to the crowd.  And then he took some fish and he blessed them, and we gave them to the crowd.  And there were seven baskets full of leftovers.

A prayer for the day:

God, You can do more with what we have than we could ever imagine. But still, we keep our fists clenched, our wallets folded, and our hearts closed. Teach us to open ourselves so that You might transform the world again. Amen.
