Dr. Brown’s focus of research includes African American political culture, with an emphasis on gender, as well as African American women’s arts and culture, political narrative, and theories of collectivity and citizenship. Lynching was carried out in the ‘light of day’ with large crowds present and not necessarily in secret. How did this happen and continue to happen? Dr. Brown will take us through the obstacles that prevented lynching from becoming a federal crime and how those obstacles were finally overcome, reflecting on issues such as state’s rights along the way.
